{education} Day Four: Falmouth Academy class!

On the fourth day of the Falmouth Academy 'Biology and Behavior of Whales' summer class, we all piled into the bus and drove down to Provincetown! We boarded the Dolphin Fleet whale watch boat along with Cape Cod Times reporter Mary Ann Bragg and photographer Shane Flanigan for an amazing day on the water - it was sunny, warm, and flat calm waters for a day of whale spotting!

After scanning the waters in hopes of catching a glimpse of a real live whale - students were treated to nice looks at a couple of fin whales, and then the lazy show of a humpback mother and calf!  The mother is known to researchers as Ventisca - the Spanish word for "blizzard". She and her calf came close to the vessel and let the students get a good luck at the hair follicles on her chin, and her long white pectoral flippers.

After our whale watch, we strolled down MacMillan Pier a few docks to find Lisa Sette, Rescue Assistant, at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown. She told us more about the important work that they do removing fishing gear that has become entangled around marine mammals and sea turtles, and she showed us some of the tools they use to safely get this difficult task accomplished working from the R/V Ibis.

We walked up through the crowded, colorful, winding streets of Provincetown and up to the offices for the Center for Coastal Studies, where Jessica Thompson was able to show us around the right whale aerial survey program. She had some baleen that the students were able to touch and she showed us images of Wart online via the New England Aquarium photo id catalog. Wart is a female right whale that was disentangled by the Center for Coastal Studies and has since had a new calf - extremely important in a small population of only 500 or so individuals. Then the students got a chance to try on the gumby survival suits which made for some good laughs!
