{Sighting Advisory System} Right Whale Reports

Ever wonder where we get all those right whale sightings reported to us and displayed on the interactive Google map online? Check out this new pie chart below.  Most sightings come from dedicated right whale aerial surveys run by NOAA Fisheries' Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Florida Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia DNR, Sea to Shore Alliance, NOAA Fisheries' Southeast Regional Office, the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, and the New England Aquarium.


Some of those sighting reports trigger a Dynamic Management Area (DMA) where vessels are requested to avoid the area or transit at 10 knots or less to minimize the risk of vessel collision.
